Autumn is our favorite exterior painting season in Middle Tennessee. The worst of the summer heat is gone, and a wall in the afternoon sun is pleasant to work on again. It is also the season with the shortest usable window, because what ends it is the overnight low rather than the afternoon high. In NOAA’s 1991–2020 climate normals for Nashville International Airport, the average October night already bottoms out at 49.9°F, a fraction under the number most latex paint is labeled for.

The number that matters is the night, not the day

Most exterior latex paint carries a minimum application temperature, and Sherwin-Williams’ exterior application FAQ gives 50°F as the normal recommendation for latex. The same page says the temperature should stay in the suggested range, and above the dew point, for at least 48 hours after application. The minimum covers the two nights after the brush stroke as well as the hour of it.

A Nashville autumn day that reaches 68°F and drops to 41°F overnight fails that requirement even though the afternoon looked ideal, and that is an ordinary day here: NOAA’s November normals for the airport are 61.4°F for the high and 39.2°F for the low. When the night drops that far, Sherwin-Williams says the paint can stop coalescing, and dew soaking into the soft film pulls ingredients to the surface as it dries. The same page lists what follows: surface staining, surfactant leaching, mildew, poor adhesion and a shorter life for the paint.

Why does dew point matter when painting outside?

A surface cooler than the dew point collects moisture, and Sherwin-Williams is plain that cold and surface moisture keep a paint film from forming properly. Autumn dew comes early in the evening, and the north wall loses its sun first, so before we open a can on it in the afternoon we put a hand on the siding and check that it is still dry.

Our rule is simpler than a number on a chart: the surface has to be dry and above the dew point when we start, and it has to stay that way. Sherwin-Williams says most products need at least four hours of dry time before moisture can settle on them, and that the cooler the day, the sooner you stop. So we quit early, and we work around the house behind the sun so we are never painting a wall that is about to go into shade.

  • Check the overnight low, not just the daytime high
  • Stop by mid-afternoon rather than working until dusk
  • Paint each wall after the sun has warmed and dried it
  • Never paint siding that is still damp from dew or washing
  • Wait longer between coats when the days are cool

Low-temperature paints and what they change

Several manufacturers make exterior paint rated down to 35°F. Sherwin-Williams names Duration, Resilience, SuperPaint and A-100 Exterior in its FAQ, and Benjamin Moore’s Regal Select exterior product page lists an application range of 35 to 100°F. Sherwin-Williams says a paint like this can stretch the season by as much as two months in most of the country. These products are formulated to keep coalescing at lower temperatures, and they are still at the mercy of the weather.

They do nothing about dew, and the rating still has to hold through the nights after the paint goes on. In Nashville the calendar catches up with them as well. NOAA’s freeze probabilities for the airport put the first freeze on or before November 3 in half of years and by November 18 in nine years out of ten, and the normal December low of 33.3°F sits below the 35°F rating. They buy time in early November rather than making December viable.

What exterior work can be done when it is too cold to paint?

The preparation is the part of an exterior job that decides how long it lasts, and much of it can happen in weather too cold to paint. On our exterior painting jobs, scraping, sanding, caulking within the caulk’s own temperature rating, replacing rotten trim and washing the house are the work we keep for the cool weeks. Our post on exterior paint that fails early reads each kind of failure back to the preparation underneath it.

On a house built before 1978, that scraping and sanding is regulated. The EPA’s Renovation, Repair and Painting rule requires anyone paid to disturb paint in pre-1978 housing to be certified in lead-safe work practices, and our post on lead paint in older Nashville homes covers what that looks like on site.

Autumn is also when we would book. Our own exterior calendar fills from April through the first cool weeks, and we lay out the spring schedule over the winter, so a quote in November gets a better spring slot than one in March. The forecast can still surprise us; the National Weather Service’s Nashville climate page lists the latest first freeze on record as November 29, 2024. If a wall of yours is waiting, ask us for an estimate while there is still daylight after work to walk the house.

FAQ

The Last Month to Paint Outside in Nashville — questions

What is the minimum temperature to paint a house exterior?

Most exterior latex paint is labeled for 50°F, and low-temperature products from Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore go down to 35°F. The surface also has to stay in that range, and above the dew point, while the film cures; Sherwin-Williams suggests at least 48 hours. In a Middle Tennessee autumn that means checking the overnight low before committing to a wall.

Can you paint outside in winter in Nashville?

Occasionally, and not reliably. NOAA’s normal overnight lows at the Nashville airport run from 30.1°F to 33.3°F across December, January and February, below even the 35°F rating of low-temperature paints, so a winter exterior day needs a mild spell that holds through the nights after it. We treat the exterior season as ending in November and pick it back up in March, when the normal low is back above 40°F.

Does paint applied too cold have to be redone?

If it lost its bond, yes. Paint that never formed a proper film can stain, grow mildew, lose adhesion and wear out early, and another coat on top does not repair a weak bond to the surface underneath. The exception is frosting on latex that got cold or damp too soon in its cure; Sherwin-Williams says to rinse it off with plenty of warm water from a garden hose.

How long does exterior paint need to dry before rain?

Most products need at least four hours of dry time before moisture settles on them, according to Sherwin-Williams, and the cooler the day, the sooner painting should stop. Dew counts as moisture too, which is why we finish each wall well before evening and never paint siding that is still damp.
